Pat Robertson's endorsement

The founder of the once popular Christian Coalition, Pat Robertson, has formally endorsed former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Robertson has every right to endorse who he pleases. It does raise the question of whether this sort of endorsement helps or hurts a candidate.

What do you think?

Robertson's endorsement of Giuliani confirms to me that Robertson is all about power instead of principle. Giuliani is the current frontrunner and presumed nominee for the GOP. Despite the fact that these two men spent a couple of decades supporting opposite positions on abortion, gun control, immigration, etc., Robertson is going to grab the coattail of the heir apparent because he can't stand being distanced from those in power.

What an interesting development. That and supposedly Dobson is behind Romney...the Mormon.

It makes me wonder if this is more about defeating Hillary then standing up for what one believes.

That being said, I don't think Rudy would be a horrible choice.

Charles,
I hadn't considered that Pat Robertson might benefit from the endorsement, but that does make sense. To some degree, acquiring an endorsement from Robertson feels a little like desperation. I saw the Vitter and Brownback endorsements as positive momentum...the Robertson endorsement just seemed out of place. Perhaps I am underestimating Robertson's influence.

Jeff,
Good point. You think we're in for an election with an 'anyone but Hillary' mantra?

I have wondered what happens to one's political chips when their early endorsement doesn't get a nomination. It is still early, isn't it?

I think for many it is the anybody but Hillary war cry. But a few are talking about an evangelical third party candidate who represents "family values."

In that case it seems to split the Republican vote and send Hillary to the presidency....which would drive folks like Robertson crazy.

Plus Bloomberg is making noise of running again as a third party guy. Can you imagine three people from New York running?

This is gearing up to be one of the most interesting presidential elections ever.

The only thing that I could see that might make this even more interesting is to see a ballot with a republican and a democrat running together. It would provide something for both parties to fuss about. :)
